My Favorite Bible Passages — #3

Why does the Bible exist? What is its purpose? These questions make for some very interesting and lively discussion. Here are a few of the ideas that people throw out in response.

  • The Bible is God’s rule book.
  • The Bible is a manual for life.
  • The Bible is a code of ethics.
  • The Bible is God’s plan for man’s salvation.
  • The Bible is a history book.

This list is by no means exhaustive. Maybe you have of thought of the Bible in these terms. And certainly, these are partially true, but they don’t give the big picture.
Jesus actually weighed in on the subject. In one of His many conversations with the Pharisees, He had this to say:

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. John 5:39-40 (ESV)

The Bible is God’s testimony concerning His Son. From start to finish, it is the story of Jesus. He is the key to understanding the Bible, both the Old Testament and the New. He is God’s word to man.
Why does the Bible exist? Jesus gave the answer. The Bible bears witness about Him.
What is the Bible’s purpose? So that we may have life in Him.
The next time you read the Scriptures, keep Jesus’ words to the Pharisees in mind. You’ll realize you are reading His story.

  1. “Scriptures” are essential to (describe) Jesus’ nature.Did Jesus,or Paul, use any other scriptures other than the law prophets or psalms to point to all there is to know about the Christ. Was the mystery revealed by further scriptues or did the Holy Spirit reveal it through what had already been given.Just a thought. My head swirels with these.Might need to up my meds!

    1. That was cute Frank, I think I need to up mine as well.
All i know is that all the law and prophets have been revealed to all those that have the Holy Ghost, without the Holy Ghost we are none of Christ’s this is where truth is revealed, God being each believers teacher of truth through the Holy Ghost. So yes much more is revealed, as we have the testimony of Christs’ walk before the death, and after the death with the ressurection, thus the day of pentecost. Bottom line for me Just trust God as God has always put out to all who will come to him to trust him and you shall receive mercy as God is merciful fully revealed through Christ Jesus

  2. Bob, thank you for this tid bit of pure truth
I have always seen the acronyms of the word bible as basic instruction before leaving earth believe, believe and therefore believe, for the entire bible is a love story to mankind olne of God’s Mercy to usward, therefore we have mercy to give as God gave us

  3. A few weeks ago one of the favorite verses was:
John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
The Bible is the gateway to the fulfilment of this truth in the life of God in the believer. TO KNOW GOD! This is what our life here is all about and to understand His purposes. It is all about Jesus we are secondary and the primary benefactors of God’s purpose and intent from the beginning of His redemptive work. He is primary we are secondary. This means we are to focus on Jesus Christ and not ourself. The Bible is viwer to see Him. The Bible is the mind of Christexposed to us so we can know Him and have eternal life.
    God Bless,

  4. Considering that salvation comes by grace THROUGH faith, you must believe in order to be saved. Specifically, you must believe in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and what those three things mean.
Face it, if there were no Old Testament, no history of Israel and their failure to attain a righteousness of their own…If there had been no prophesies concerning Jesus, then no one would ever have put their faith in Him.
What if Jesus just showed up one day and proclaimed, “I am Jesus, the Son of God, somebody nail me to a tree.” Even if his death was a sacrifice that satisfied God in regard to the sin debt of the world, no one would think of Him as any more than a kook.
There had to be a detailed description of Him as well as an explanation of what he accomplished in order for anyone to understand. The word of God has been and continues to be the testimony of God concerning His Son so that those that belive will have life and be saved.

  5. Yes the Bible is very important,it’s to beleive what God said at the cross and His Resurrection to trust Him in everything,to me He is my everything.
    God bless you all,Lorraine quintal
