The first promise

This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts (Hebrews 8:10a).

The first promise of the New Covenant is this:

I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts.

In the Old Covenant, the law was written on tablets of stone. The people had to rely on external effort and human willpower to live up to them.

We all know that didn't end well for them. And it doesn't end well for us, either.

But God doesn't leave us there under the weight of the Old Covenant. Through Christ's death, he ushered in the hope and life of the New Covenant.

In this New Covenant, the Holy Spirit writes God's laws on the tablet of your heart. The New Covenant is fulfilled internally, through faith in Jesus Christ.

God wrote the laws of faith, hope and love on your heart. He has done so through the Holy Spirit, who works faith, hope and love out in your life.

Now, instead of trying to live for God through human effort, you can actually live for God through the power of God's Spirit.

He is at work in you to will and to do of God's good pleasure.

Instead of trying to earn God's favor through obedience to external laws, let the Holy Spirit work faith, hope and love in your heart. The result will be a life free from condemnation and guilt.

In Him,

The new is not like the old...

It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them", declares the Lord (Hebrews 8:8, 9).
