Take the new path to freedom.

He has made us competent as ministers of a New Covenant - not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6).

In his book, The Principle of the Path, Andy Stanley puts forth a rather simple premise. Path determines destination, and the path you are on trumps everything else in life. This seems obvious, but it is very often overlooked.

For example, we all try to lose weight. Every year we make our resolutions. Certainly, the path to get us there is clearly marked. In spite of all our good intentions, the "why-can't-I-lose-weight" frustration leaves us scratching our heads trying to figure out what went wrong. The answer is simple. We stayed on the wrong path and it took us to the only place that it could - a bigger number on the scale.

In 2 Corinthians 3, Paul is telling the story of two paths. Both have a predetermined destination. The path of the Old Covenant is charted by a set of laws spelled out on stones. Even though they came with glory, they condemn us and lead to death. Paul put it bluntly; the law kills.

You may want to experience freedom and walk in the newness of life as a Christian, but if you are on the Old Covenant path, you'll never get there. Freedom is not where that law path leads. You can try harder and do more, but your activities will not change the final destination. The final destination on the law path is judgment, condemnation and death.

This is why so many well-intentioned believers struggle and are deeply frustrated with Christianity. It's not that they aren't sincere. They are simply on the wrong path.

The good news is that there is another path. It is the New Covenant path, a path shaped by God's love and grace. A path that leads to life and rest for the soul.

If you want to experience freedom and enjoy new life, take the new path - the path of the New Covenant. This is a path that is travelled by grace through faith in Jesus.

In Him,

But just as you excel in everything - in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us - see that you also excel in this grace of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7).
