Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).
Weary and burdened. Sadly, this is how many Christians describe themselves. The treadmill of performance has worn them out.
I know that feeling. I put the burden of the Christian life on my shoulders. I tried the best I could to live up to the Christian expectations. My efforts left me exhausted and wondering if this was just the way it was supposed to be.
Maybe you've felt that way or are feeling that way right now.
Here is the good news.
Jesus Christ finished his work. The responsibility was on his shoulders and he completed the task.
Jesus put it this way in his high priestly prayer: "I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began" (John 17:4, 5). God the Father answered Jesus' prayer. He exalted him to the highest place - the right hand of the Father.
There is nothing more to do concerning your sins. Jesus has done it all. This means you can rest. Here is Jesus' promise to all who come to him: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Many Christians hear messages every week that push them to do more, be more or try harder. They grow more weary and tired every week. That's not God's desire for you. Your sins are forgiven. You are righteous in his sight. He loves you and accepts you. If you are weary and burdened, accept Jesus' invitation today - come unto Jesus and you'll find rest for your soul.
