Have you done enough?

I mean enough to earn your place in heaven.

My friend Gaston wasn’t sure.

Weeks before he died, he told me point blank.

“Bob, I haven’t done enough. I wish I could go back and redo so many parts of my life.”

These were sad words to hear.

You see, no one can work their way into Heaven. No one can do enough.

But here is the good news.

Jesus did enough to cover everyone.

And he did it so that the righteous requirements of the law would be fulfilled in you.

If you are worried that you haven’t done enough, let that worry go.

Rest in Christ’s finished work.

When you do, the peace of God will fill your heart.

Did you know that as a believer in Jesus, you have a new citizenship.

It is in Heaven.

And it is based on your new birth in Christ.

You belong to him, and are now part of the kingdom of God.

Why does the Bible tell us this great news?

It does so to anchor us to the great hope that we have in Christ.

A hope that gives us confidence and security to live as children of God in this crazy world.

A hope that makes us stand out against the patterns of this world.

A hope that gives us a purpose in representing the kingdom of God

Now your passport identifies you as a citizen of an earthly country.

But your real citizenship is in heaven.

Rejoice, you have an eternal home.

My friend Rich passed away recently.

A rare lung disease along with an aggressive cancer took his life.

Before he died, I asked him if he was afraid.

In Rich like fashion, he said, “What do I have to be afraid of?”

He was ready to see Jesus.

And when he took his last breath, he did so with peace in his heart.

My friend is absent from the body now, and present with the Lord.

I will miss him. But I will always remember his final week. He faced his impending death with rock solid faith in Jesus and a hope that could not be shaken.

That’s the power of the Gospel.

I pray that it is bringing to you a rock solid faith and an unshakeable hope to you as you face the circumstances of your daily life.

In 2011, the Dallas Mavericks won the world championship in basketball.

No one thought they would win. But they won, and they won big. And the city of Dallas threw a parade to celebrate.

Thousands of fans lined the streets to share in the victory the players won. And for the city of Dallas, it was a magical time of rejoicing

But it doesn’t compare at all to the rejoicing that took place when truth won out in your life.

Think about the day you responded to the Gospel.

You were

• set free from sin and death,
• made alive together with Christ
• you were cleansed and made right with God.
• you were lost, and then you were found.

And according to Jesus, this great work of truth in your life was cause for celebration in heaven.
