Before we got new life we had to go through death. The story of the Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God had to take us though death to bring us to life in Him. "What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! ... In Hebrews 4 we read some very comforting passages: "Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." Jesus, our high priest, lived here on earth as one of us and withstood the temptations of the world. He is able to sympathize with us. He knows exactly what we are going through. Hebrews 4:14-16

We are different from the world in that we are alive in Christ Jesus. What we're talking about is living out the Christian life. Three things that God commands us to do: 1. Welcome fellow believers. "Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." Romans 15:7 2. Forgive one another. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:32 3. Love others as Christ has loved us. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." John 15:12

Paul is meeting with elders from the church of Ephesus and writes: "And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified." Acts 20:32 There's so much that tries to erode us and we need to be built up and that is done by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

John tells the story of the resurrection focused on Mary's discovery of the stone being rolled away. She thought someone stole the body. The tomb was empty. But Jesus was still in the garden and when he said "Mary..." she recognized Jesus immediately. The resurrection became personal to Mary.

We're celebrating Holy Week this week. We're celebrating the events that led up to the ushering in of the New Covenant. We're looking at how the sacrifice of Jesus Christ impacted our story. "When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, 'I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.' ... This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. ... This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." Luke 22:14-15,19-20

One of the first thing we need to seek out in dire circumstances is hope. And Peter points us to this hope to calm our hearts and give us reassurance. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead..." 1 Peter 1:3 We know that God is faithful and just. Vs. 7... "so that the tested genuineness of your faith ... may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

Everything you see on the news is about this coronavirus. And so much of the response is to shutdown everything to reduce the spread of the disease. But all of that stirs up fear. Even the shopkeepers are seeing fear in their customer's eyes. So what are we afraid of? What is putting fear in your heart? Hebrews 13:5,6, 1 Timothy 1:7, and 1 Peter 5:7.

There are so many that are looking for hope in this world today. And that's what the Gospel message bring us - hope. The World of God is filled with statements of hope. "We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel" Colossians 1:3-5
