Child of God

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Yesterday we talked about the importance of our identity. In Christ we've been made new and give a brand new identity. Jesus came into this world to save sinners and all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Now we've been born again into the family of God. We are children of God. Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God..."

Grace puts us in union with Jesus. His story becomes our story. The truth of this is profound. It's one thing to know that we have been saved and will spend eternity with him. It's quite another to know that you have been given a new heart and Jesus has taken up residence in you. When you realize you are a new creature in Christ, you can live a life full of abundance.

No Greater Identity

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

When we don't know who we are, we play religious games to try to figure out who we are. But God wants us to know we are children of God. John wrote: "He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God."

The Dividing Wall

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Discussion about Afghanistan and the hurricane in Haiti. There's so much going on in the world. We have to turn to Jesus Christ and the Gospel. Ephesians 2 speaks to this: "For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility". In Christ, we can be at peace with another. This has huge implications to us individually, but also to the world around us.

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Andrew Farley

What is the truth about God? God is love. God so loved the world... We need to get our ideas about God aligned with what He says about himself. Our view of God is distorted by our life of sin and death. But when we are born again we can know God as who He truly is. And that changes how we relate to one another.

The Knowledge of God

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Yesterday we asked the question, "do you know what you believe"? When you think about God, what comes into your mind? What are your thoughts about God? Why is this important? Power of 8: Law and Grace, part 2

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Far from being a dull theological tenant, the way of grace is the most exciting way to live. As children of God, we're no longer under the law. We live under the grace of God. No one is righteous under the law. Righteousness is a free gift of the grace of God. How then should we live? Led by the Spirit. The good news is God has sent his Spirit to take up residence in us. The Spirit renews our minds and empowers us to live as children of God. "For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God." Galatians 2:19

When we're talking about law and grace, it really gets down to the covenants. The Old Covenant established through Moses and the New Covenant that was established through Jesus Christ. Recall David who pleaded with God, "Don't take your spirit from me." contrasted with Jesus' plea from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

The Ministry of the Spirit

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Andrew Farley

2 Corinthians 3 lays out the contrast between law and grace. Let's talk about why it's important to draw a contrast between law and grace. Paul states God "made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."

The Contrast of Grace and Law

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Everything about this life is grace from start to finish. But often we have to seen grace in contrast to something else. That contrast is typically the law. "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1:17 The ministry of Jesus Christ is a ministry life. "What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin." Romans 7:7

Let's look at the Old Testament in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Tested by Fire

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

We encounter all kinds of trials and tribulations because we live in a world that is anti-God. Jesus entered into the darkness of the world and placed us into his kingdom. And as believers today we are ambassadors for this his kingdom. God sustains us by his power. "In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire... Grace Justifies You Freely

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

We can't earn salvation. It's not a works based program. We see this in Romans 4 where Paul spells it out that the righteous will live by faith. And to that faith in imparted righteousness. Do you want to be right with God? Do you want to know that all is right between you and your creator? Christ dealt with your sins and took them away, giving you the very righteousness of Christ. Grace justifies you freely because of the work of Jesus Christ
