Contend for the Faith

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

"I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people." Jude. Jesus didn't come to make us better people. He came to die so we could die in him and be raised into his resurrected life. God accepted the sacrifice Jesus made so that we can become beneficiaries of his sacrifice.

  • As believers, does the Word first go to our spirits or to our souls?

What is the Gospel?

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

How to be a minister of the New Covenant. That's what God has equipped every believer with. We've been made witnesses as recipients of the grace of God. What is the Gospel? Paul states it this way: "... For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures ..." 1 Corinthians 1-7

  • Tom asks for clarification on Ephesians 2:8 and Romans 5:1 concerning hearing the Gospel, believing and accessing God's grace.
  • Brad wants to know why God's patience wore thin in the Old Testament but never runs out in the New Testament.

Advance the Good News

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

There are many aspects to the work we do in Christ. When we look at it, it's truly a partnership in the Gospel. In Philippians 1:21 Paul spells out this work on earth: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." We are part of something much bigger than ourselves ... to advance the good news of his love and grace in the world.

Partners in the Gospel

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Philippians 1:3-5 "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now." Thank you for participating with Basic Gospel in partnering to get the good news to those who need to hear. This gospel of God's grace has saved each one of us individually and tied us together as on in the body of Christ.

Hard Passages - Part 8

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

What does it mean in the Lord's prayer to "forgive as we forgive our debtors" (Matthew 6:12)? Why did Jesus use wine and wineskins to illustrate the difference between the New Covenant and the Old Covenant in Matthew 9:4-17? What is the discipline spoken of in Hebrews 12:5, 6. Is it something to fear or something to be grateful for? These three hard passages make up today's teaching series.

A Voice for the Gospel

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

If we want to be voices for the Gospel we need to be ministers of the New Covenant. Why? Because the New Covenant if the source of life. In Corinthians 3:7, 8 Paul writes: "Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses' face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?"

  • William asks if someone kept the law perfectly could they be saved.
  • Mark 9:43, 44 "And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire" Elinore wonders about this tough teaching.
  • What is the significance of the Luke 9:62, "Jesus said to him, 'No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.'"

Ministers of The New Covenant

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

"Who also made us competent as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." 2 Corinthians 3:6 If we're going to carry out this ministry God has given us it has to be the ministry of the New Covenant. It's the ministry of life. We were dead spiritually and in need of life. And what Jesus Christ brings is life.

  • Brad echoes Bob and Andrew's thoughts on "being a voice" for the New Covenant.
  • Myles asks about the world's philosophies in light of the ministry of the New Covenant.

Proclaim His Excellencies

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

What are the spiritual sacrifices we're to offer? These sacrifices are sacrifices of praise. 2 Peter 5:9 "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light..." This gives every moment of every day purpose beyond what we can see in this world.

Impact Your World

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

What does it mean to us that we've been born again into the family of God? In Philippians 3:17-20 Paul writes: "Join with others in following my example ... take note of the patter we gave you. ... our citizenship is in heaven." Because the King of Heaven has taken up residence in me I am representative of his kingdom here on earth. And that will make an impact in this world.

Hard Passages - Part 7

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

The hard passages we are looking at today speak to grieving the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians we are told not to grieve the Holy Spirit, In 1 Peter 1 we are called to be holy in all we do, and in 1 Peter 4 we are warned that "the end of all things is near". How do these Scriptures relate to one another and how can a believer be confident in their eternal security when faced with these seemingly impossible commands? Those are the questions we deal with on today's Hard Passages.
