A Heart of Thankfulness

When you pray prayers that matter, you're really praying prayers that have been shaped by the grace of God. And they connect to the will of God. His will is the new covenant. We see in Paul's prayers a heart of thankfulness. If the grace of God shapes how we pray we will find a note of thankfulness in our prayers too. Second to thankfulness is that we'll pray about things that really matter. And that's what we read in Ephesians 3:17-19 "...I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

So That You May Know Him Better

Grace shapes the way we pray. And Paul is a great example of that. Ephesians 1:17 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. " All too often we're praying to get more, when we don't truly realize what we already have in Jesus.

Enlightened to God's Will

Have you ever prayed to win the lottery? And then made a deal with God to give so much to the church and charities and after you decide how you'll spend your winnings you're already out of money with nothing left to fulfill your promise. James addresses this in chapter 4: "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."

God Hears You

When I pray, I want God to hear me and to answer. Is there a way to know that God hears and answers our prayers? Yes. 1 John 5:14, 15 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him."

They're All Gone - Lesson 24

What happens when God forgives? The main Greek word for forgiveness is aphiemi. The primary meaning is "to send forth or away, to let go from oneself". It's a powerful word. It's also used in the context of divorce. In essence, Jesus "divorced" you from your sins. They have been put away and God remembers them no more. The fact that we have been declared righteous is proof that our sins have been forgiven. Our sins no longer define who we are. That's the ministry of reconciliation - the God is no longer counting sins against us. We have the righteousness of Jesus. (Chapter 8, page 57)

Confidence to Approach God

Does God grant your prayers? Does he hear your prayers? In 1 John 5:14, 15 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him." The operative phrase is that we "pray according to God's will". How do we learn to pray this way?

A Prayer in Private

We're talking about prayer — Jesus teaching his disciples how to pray. He says, "don't pray as the hypocrites". There's a personal connection when we pray which is why we pray in Jesus' name. So how do the hypocrites pray? In the synagogues and on the street corners... in the public so people can see me. And what does Jesus say? "they have received their reward already." He instructed the disciples to pray in private... in their closets. He is there to give his full to us because we have a personal relationship with the Father.

...and When You Pray

We read the words Jesus said when addressing prayer, "...and when you pray." It's a basic response for people everywhere to respond in prayer when tragedy hits. So it's not a matter of if we pray but to whom we pray. That's what Jesus wants us to understand. People have different ideas of who "God" is. But through the Gospel we have a complete understanding of to whom we pray and now we can cry out "Abba, Father".

Happy Labor Day! Labor Day is dedicated to the American worker and the contributions they have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. We hope you enjoy this special holiday and these calls from the past year. Ali called with comments about the Quran. Ali believes there is common language regarding Jesus in all religions. Bob encourages Ali to take another look at the crucifixion of Christ. Clay asks about the full armor of God. Bob explains the armor as it pertains to Christ and how we live our daily life. We loved speaking with Allea, a young girl with a question about the Sun God. She has heard that if we worship on Sunday, we are worshipping the Sun God. She asks a powerful question - "Why can't we just serve God in church - the real God?"

They're All Gone - Lesson 23

Merriam-Webster defines forgiveness this way; to stop feeling anger toward (someone who has done something wrong): to stop blaming (someone): to stop requiring payment of (money that is owed). To find out what forgiveness really means, we need to go the one who has the authority to forgive our sins. Jesus delivered his mercy to the paralytic in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 2:1-12) with four simple words, "Your sins are forgiven." He says the same four words to you. Jesus is God. When he says your sins are forgiven, they are forgiven. (Chapter 8, page 55)
