Self-controlled, Upright and Godly Lives

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

Grace is the most exciting topic to talk about in the Bible. So what does grace say about the law. This is the passage that convinced me that I'm no longer under the law. "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good." Titus 2 11-14

Faith Revealed

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

What is the role of the law and the role of the Holy Spirit for a believer? In Galatians 3 we read: "Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian." When Jesus is revealed in our life then we can live by faith. We are raised to walk in the newness of life.

No Longer Under the Law

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We are now under the grace of God. The law has stepped aside so we can be led by Jesus. The question arises, "what then was the purpose of the law?" We learn that the Mosaic covenant was for the nation of Israel. But we were under the universal law. Either way the law showed us our problem... our need for salvation... our need for Jesus. The law can't fix us, it can only show us our need for Christ. And once it's done its work we are no longer under the law. "The law was our guardian until Christ came..."

Sin is No Longer Your Master

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

When we understand that grace is not a thing but the person of Jesus Christ. And when you understand that it puts this verse into context. "For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace." The law condemns. If we try to live the Christian life under rules and regulations, we will fall flat on our face. God does not hold our sins against us anymore, thanks to the person and work of Jesus Christ. Jesus invites us to let go of the law and embrace the gift of grace. It makes all the difference.

Let Go - Lesson 28

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

It's difficult for many people to forgive themselves. They can understand that God has forgiven them but they have trouble letting go of the past. We've all heard the story of the prodigal son. The world with all its seductive charms lured him into a life of recklessness and waste. It led to a place where he felt unworthy and unlovable. Here's a powerful truth: God knows your real story. He is not ashamed of you. For proof, look at the cross. Let go of those feelings and let the forgiveness of God cleanse your soul. Faith says it's worth the risk! (Chapter 9, page 67)

Grace, Wondrous Grace

Our hearts go out to the people in the Bahamas and Haiti. If you're so moved I would encourage you to get involved in the relief effort. Find out how you can help. It's wonderful to know that God moves in the hearts of people when things like this happen.

  • We all know that we are saved by grace through faith. We know there's no salvation apart from the grace of God. But all too often we try to mix in the law. The grace of God lifts us higher. It puts us on a whole new plain. Martin Lloyd Jones wrote: "The Christian life starts with grace, it must continue with grace, it ends with grace. Grace, wondrous grace."
  • Christopher asks about the quality of his relationship with God and with others.
  • June asks about loved ones who have passed. If Christ is in us, and they are present with the Lord, are they somehow with us as well?

It is by Grace You Are Saved

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

Ephesians 2:1-6 "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins... But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved." Until I understood what salvation was all about I struggled immensely in my Christian life. It's only when I found the way of grace that my life made sense. Salvation is first and foremost being made alive in Christ.

God's Grace

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Grace is a word that's attached to the person of Jesus Christ. So when we're talking about grace we're really talking about Jesus. Grace really is the heart and soul of this Christian life. Most of us have heard two basic definitions of grace: grace is God's unmerited favor and the acrostic, God's riches at Christ's expense. And while grace is those things, it's so much more. I hope people can really come to that point where they say grace really is amazing. We define grace as God's work in Jesus Christ to make us spiritually alive and to empower us to live in this world as his children.

Full of Grace and Truth

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

When you're talking about the Gospel you're talking about a Gospel of grace. You can't separate one from the other. The grace of God is everything. It's a big word - bigger then anything we'll ever know. We read in John 1, 14 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Let Go - Lesson 27

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Some people believe their sin is so bad they have crossed a line and that they are beyond the reach of God's grace and forgiveness. If you believe your sins are so big they have exhausted the supply of God's grace, you are doomed to a life of self-condemnation. You will miss the grace of God. Here is the good news. God's grace never runs out. It is a limitless supply. There's no place you can be that God cannot reach you and pour out his grace and mercy on you. Are you willing to receive his grace and mercy and set your heart at rest? (Chapter 9 ,page 65)
