Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

The Grace Guide to Marriage - part 7

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Marriage is hard. Even the best of marriages have tough times. In those bad times and even in the good times, we have to deal with our own selfishness once we get married. That's why its so important to depend on our relationship with the Lord. The Bible encourages us to be "quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger". James 1:19 Your spouse needs you to truly listen to him/her, not to jump in with opinion or solutions. The word "hear" means to listen attentively with the idea that you will do something with what you have heard. It means that we really want to know what our mate is bringing to the table so that we can respond and act to what is truly being communicated. Remember this saying: "Listen without defending and speak without offending."

Released from the Law

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Andrew Farley

2 Corinthians 3:17 "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." We are made free from sin. We are made free from the law. You are not under the law, but under grace. Under grace we're motivated to live upright lives. When we're talking about "grace" we're not talking about an "it" we're talking about the very person of Jesus Christ. The life we live is a life by the Spirit and we can freely enjoy the abundant life he has given us.

  • My older brother lives a life beyond his means and is asking for my help. Should I help him or not?

Live as Free People

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

So often when the grace of God is taught it is challenged by the idea that we can't handle the freedom of Grace... that we'll simply use this as a license to sin. But the reality is we're free as believers in Christ. We're free to walk in the Spirit or to indulge the flesh. As we learn to abide in Christ those desires of the flesh fade away. 1 Peter 2:16 "Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God." And enjoy your relationship with Jesus.

Trying to Please Man or God

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

What is it like trying to please people? Following the ways of the world is a powerful force in the world. And when you do, fear is the motivating factor. Fearful of what people think of you and start acting hypocritically. We read this in Galatians 2:13 "And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy."

A Servant of Christ

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

One of the great blessings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is freedom from the opinions of other people. Too often we allow those opinions to influence and control us. That's what Peter was doing when Paul confronted him in Antioch. Galatians 2:11-17 In Galatians 1:10 Paul writes: "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."

  • A caller asks about a preacher being more responsible about teaching the Gospel — even losing his salvation... 1 Corinthians 9:27 "But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified."
  • Margie calls to say "thank you for speaking the truth".

The Grace Guide to Marriage - part 6

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Today we look at practical application of what the Bible says. How do you love your wife as Christ loves the church? It's not about a feeling. It is about an action. 1 Corinthians 13 describes these actions. How do we act out the love of God to our mate? A woman's core need is security; for a man it is respect. Telling your wife you love her gives her security in marriage. Husbands, laser focus your attention on communicating to your wife that your marriage is secure, that she is valued and loved.

Do you not know ... Romans 7:1 "Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? ... " Paul goes on to talk about the law in regard to marriage. But he's really talking about the fact that we have died in Jesus and have been released from the law. The law has been fulfilled in Jesus and we live in the power of the resurrected life of Jesus Christ.

Children of the Promise

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis, Andrew Farley

Galatians 4:22-28 "... But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. ..." If you want to be a child of the promise you have to let go of the law and live according to the Spirit.

A Slave to Christ

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

"... present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." Romans 6:13-14 If you're under the law, you are a slave to sin. If you're under grace, you're a slave to Christ.
