Called to Live in the Grace of Christ

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ..." Galatians 1:6-9 Would Paul be astonished at the church today?

  • Mary Jo asks for explanation concerning Matthew 19:16-17 where Jesus is called "good teacher".

Interview with Larry Alex Taunton - The Trend of "Nones"

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Larry Alex Taunton

Our guest today is Larry Alex Taunton. He is the author of The Grace Effect and The Faith of Christopher Hitchens. Larry is also the founder and executive director of the Fixed Point Foundation. Larry shares some insight into the disturbing trend of "nones" - those who have no spiritual affiliation. Larry shares his research that children who identify as atheists generally have a higher percentage of having come from broken homes. His contention is that in divorce, everything is divided-not only materially but also in spiritual attitudes. In divorce, children's loyalty is divided and their stability in a spiritual sense is shaken to the core. The church needs to take seriously the doubts of children and to enter into scripture with them to provide solid answers in a culture that increasingly hostile to faith. The Only Solution

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

There's no grace apart from Jesus. So when we talk about grace we have to talk about Jesus Christ. In the midst of this political season we need to remember the only solution is Jesus. In Galatians Paul writes, "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel..."

Rest - Lesson 30

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

"Come unto Me and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). If you're not growing in Christ, maybe you have missed the message of the total forgiveness of sins. It is time to rest in Christ's finished work on the cross. God's justice was fully satisfied in the shed blood of Jesus. Jesus fully satisfied the demands of God's justice and holiness. Since God is fully satisfied with the work of Christ, you can rest in his shed blood as complete and final payment for your sins. God is satisfied. That's grace. Jesus accomplished for you what you could not accomplish for yourself. (Chapter 10, page 72)

By Grace, Through Faith in Jesus

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We're in the middle of a political season and last night's debate reminded me of the date that happened almost 2,000 years ago concerning the gospel. In Acts 15 we read: "Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: 'Unless you are circumcised, ... you cannot be saved.' ... 'God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. ... Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? It is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved...'

  • What does it mean to walk in the Spirit?
  • Do I talk to the Holy Spirit the same way I talk to the Father and to Jesus?

Grace Saves and Sustains

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

When the grace of God is taught the skeptics ask, "are you saying that we can go out and sin all we want?" It's the grace of God that sets us free from sin and death and sets us free from the power of sin. It's grace that empowers us to love others. In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul writes: "But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me." So the grace of God changed a persecutor into a proclaimer.

Grace Lived Out in Grace

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We are no longer under the law but under the grace of God. And for many that raises the question: "What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?" The law can only bring us condemnation. Titus 2:11, 12 "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age..."

Rest - Lesson 29

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Rest is the end result of learning to truly trust that your sins are forgiven by Christ once for all. If you really know that, your soul will be at rest. Out of that rest you're going to start seeing growth and transformation. But if you're still unsure about forgiveness, if you still are expecting some kind of punishment, then you will be restless. In 2 Peter 1:5-9, Peter lays out a good progression of maturity: "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins". If you are seeing these things come out of you, you are growing in your knowledge of Christ. If you are not seeing growth, Peter says you have forgotten your sins have been forgiven. (Chapter 10, page 71)
