Great Expectations - Lesson 16

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

The pressures of life can do all sorts of things inside us. Fear and anger can fill our minds, and restlessness can disturb our souls. We get to the point where all we want is a little peace. But peace is not out there and it can't be bought. Peace comes from God. As we learn to abide in Christ, we will bear the fruit of his peace in our lives. The real work is God's. We simply bear the fruit of his work in us. It is by grace through faith. With Christ in you, you will bear the fruit of his Spirit. Jesus has found a home in your heart. Expect him to do great things in and through you.

Redeemed From the Curse

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Galatians 3:10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." We couldn't even live up to the first commandment so we are cursed under the law. And we know that the righteous shall live by faith. "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us."

  • David asks us to "preach the whole message of the gospel".

An Inheritance That Can Never Perish

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Redemption does come so easily because no one can live enough to pay his debt. Peter must have had this in mind when he wrote: 1 Peter 1:3, 4 "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. " So in what ways did you find your old way of life empty?

  • What is it about keeping our eyes on Jesus that keeps us from sin?
  • Perry shares the Scripture God showed him. Romans 8:15 "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

Interview with Larry Alex Taunton

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Larry Alex Taunton

Meet Larry Taunton, the author of "The Faith of Christopher Hitchens". Hitchens, author of the book "God is Not Great", was an atheist. With the publication of that book, Hitchens challenged evangelical Christians to debate, one of whom was Larry. A warm friendship grew from that encounter. Hitchens saw the love of Jesus Christ through Larry and knew that he truly cared for him. During a road trip to Yellowstone National Park, Larry and Christopher actually worked through the first 2 chapters of John. This bible study presented the Gospel message to a man diagnosed with terminal cancer. This is a fascinating conversation about a fascinating book! You can get a copy of Larry's book, "The Faith of Christopher Hitchens" on Amazon: amzn.to/29rzzRC

Great Expectations - Lesson 15

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

You, as a believer in Christ, can say no to sin. That may be a shocking statement to you. Many of us think that it's impossible and resign ourselves to doing the "best we can". Scripture teaches that we can say no to sin because of Christ Jesus who lives inside of us. As we learn to trust him, we will learn to say no to sin. Saying no to sin is the result of the Holy Spirit's work in your life. This is grace in action. We can expect to see change in our behavior because our expectation is not based on us, but on Jesus Christ. Saying yes to God's Spirit means you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. With Christ in you, you can say no to sin. (Chapter 5, page 36)
