Live a Life Worth of the Calling

If we're going to have relationships —- meaningful and healthy relationships — we're going to have to understand the reconciliation wie have in Jesus Christ. So what does that look like when it's lived out? Ephesians 4:1, 2 "I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."

  • Romans 3:25 seems to be talking about past sins. So do we need to repent from our current and future sins?
  • Angela brings up 1 John 1:9 concerning forgiveness.

Neither Slave nor Free

One of the ways we live out the good news of Jesus Christ is through relationships. So how do we overcome prejudice? Galatians 3:28 "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." As a child of God our hope is in Jesus alone, not some earthly thing.

The Christ Event

"A New Command I Give You"

Because Jesus lives, we live. Toward the end of his life Jesus gathered his disciples to impart to them the truths of what was up ahead and what it would mean to them. In John 13:34-35 are Jesus' words: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

  • Is 1 Timothy 1:9 speaking to Jews or does it also include Gentiles?

Newness of Life

The newness of life is spelled out in the New Covenant. Jesus finished the work He was sent to do, conquering sin and death, bringing life to the believer.

Raised to Life

As you look through the Gospel accounts you see a change of the way Jesus communicates with his disciples as he gets closer to his death, burial, and resurrection. "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!" Matthew 20:18-20

Jesus Came to Give Us Life

This week is the most significant week of the year to we as believers. Apart from the resurrection there is no hope. It began on Palm Sunday as we seen Jesus' triumphal entry. The Jewish people wanted Jesus to take over the Roman government and rule over the world. But the true enemy was sin and death. And that's what Jesus came to do: defeat sin and death.

New Covenant Life—Faith, Hope and Love - Lesson 23

We talk a lot about doctrine but when we get down to it, this is all about Christ's life in us. Last week we looked at Jesus as the vine and us as the branch. As we abide in the vine we bear the fruit of the vine. Paul tells us in Galatians that the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. So what does love look like? Forgiveness. Love takes the initiative in forgiving others. That's what melts the heart of others. In John we hear Jesus' words to "love one another as I have loved you". If we are to forgive as we've been forgiven that's a clear instruction to keep our eyes on Christ... to abide in the vine. We also see that we are to rejoice in the midst of our circumstance. And we can do this because we know that God cares for us. "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him..." God is bigger than our circumstances. We need to find our footing on this solid promise of God. And this is what Paul prays for all the saints: "... I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." Ephesians 3:16-19 The Christ life is characterized by love. (Chapter 10, page 109)

One in the Body of Christ

Ephesians 2:14-18 shows the very heart of God to include both Jew and Gentile in the church. "For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit."

  • Denise is not sure of her salvation. "I'm just to the point I'm being led astray. I keep hear that [what I'm doing] isn't enough."
  • Doreen asks, if Paul went through all the suffering he did should we not expect the same?
