Love: The Heart of Reconciliation

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Only the Gospel can meet the deep need of the heart. Jesus is the solution. He is the answer to all our problems. There is something so amazing and astonishing about Jesus that when he called his disciples they left everything to follow him. One of the things we learn about Jesus is that he reconciled us to himself on the cross. The heart of reconciliation is found in the definition of love. And we know that love keeps no record of wrongs. Records of wrongs divide, but love unites.

Reconciliation in Marriage

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Reconciliation really sets the foundation for our relationship with God and it's also the foundation for our relationship with each other. And this is especially important in marriage. Marriage is hard enough and if you don't know the reconciliation you have from God it makes marriage that much more difficult. God was the one who was wronged, but he chose to initiate reconciliation toward us. And we can offer the love of God to those who have wronged us.

New Covenant Life—Faith, Hope and Love - Lesson 22

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

The slogan at Basic Gospel is "Hear It, Believe It, Live It". Through this study, we pray that you have heard the story about Jesus and been challenged to believe that Christ took away your sins, made you alive together with Him, actually raised you up to walk in the newness of life. Now in this final chapter we are going to look at the "Live It" piece of the puzzle. The gospel isn't just a set of doctrines, it really is the life of Christ that is to be lived out in and through us. That life is distinctly different from the world. When you accept Christ, he will make sure that faith, hope, and love is worked through you until you overflow to others. This is your assurance and your guarantee. For us to bear fruit—to share the love that God has put into us—we must abide in the vine of Jesus Christ. By abiding in him, we will see the fruit of love, patience, kindness, etc. begin to overflow from us to others. That is the life God has for you! Thank you for joining with us on this New Covenant Journey! (Chapter 10, page 107)

Faith: Established and Firm

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

This week we've been looking at reconciliation in light of Colossians 1:15-25. Today we look at verses 23 and 23 "But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant." So often we here the "if" in this passage interpreted incorrectly. But when we understand it in the original language we can find assurance.

Free from Accusation

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis, Andrew Farley

Let's take a look at Col. 1:21, 22 "Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation..." God initiates our reconciliation by preparing a perfect sacrifice and presenting us without blemish and free from accusation. We don't make ourselves closer to God - He makes us close to Him.

A Restored Relationship

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

God through Jesus reconciled himself to all things. God is restoring a relationship of peace that has been disturbed. We couldn't reconcile ourselves to God so he took the initiative to rebuild the relationship that was lost. And he did this through Jesus by making peace through his blood shed on the cross. Because of who Jesus is he could be the means to God reconciling himself to us.

The Image of the Invisible God

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

This month we are looking at the word reconciliation. It doesn't occur that often but it is of great importance. In Colossians 1:15-18 we read: "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation...." Paul is showing the importance of who Jesus is. He is the image of the invisible God.

New Covenant Life—Faith, Hope and Love - Lesson 21

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Love. What is it? Scripture says "Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." (1 John 4:7b-8). Love is defined as "God's willful direction toward man. It involves God doing what He knows is best for man and not necessarily what man desires." (Zodhiates) The characteristics of God's love is patience, kindness, doesn't envy, doesn't boast, isn't proud. It is not rude, not self-seeking, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs. Love doesn't delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) Replace the word "love" in this passage with the word "God" and really take in the powerful message of God's love. We can rejoice in His love and trust that He is loving us right now .... this minute, the next minute, and so on. Because of His love toward us, we can show love to others. Remember the great truth in 1 Corinthians 13:13, "But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love." (Chapter 9, page 102)

Be Reconciled to God

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation...."

  • Paul speaks a lot about himself "having a clear conscience". Can you please tell me where the conscience is? Is it in our mind or is it a part of our Spirit? Is it the Holy Spirit speaking within us, where He resides inside in us as believers? Thank you.

  • If we're all born separated from God what happens to a baby or child who hasn't reached the age of accountability?
