God's Special Possession

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

We're going to look at a controversial topic today called predestination. We read in 1 Peter 2:9, 10 "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." As the bride of Christ we've been set apart — we are a chosen nation — to express Christ on this planet. Peter sits it atop the mercy of God.

Christ is the Mercy Seat

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

You really can't talk about mercy without talking about the mercy seat. The mercy seat we see in the Old Testament is only a shadow of what was to come. Hebrews 9:5 "Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now."

Be Merciful to Those Who Doubt

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Antonin Scalia once said, ""God assumed from the beginning that the wise of the world would view Christians as fools ... and he has not been disappointed. If I have brought any message today, it is this: Have the courage to have your wisdom regarded as stupidity," he added. "Be fools for Christ. And have the courage to suffer the contempt of the sophisticated world."

Shadow and Reality - Law and Grace - Lesson 18

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Satan, the accuser, wants nothing more than to undermine your identity in Christ. It's important to remember that you were (past tense): Washed - you have been cleansed once and for all; sanctified - you have been set apart and made holy for God's use; justified - you have been made righteous. All this was accomplished in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit. You can overcome attacks on your identity by trusting that the Spirit is at work on your behalf, relying on God's promises, standing on the truth that God is for you, realizing that you are a conqueror through him who loves you, and becoming convinced that nothing can separate you from the love of God. Let the hope you have in Christ anchor your soul in truth. Remember who you are - a child of God, perfectly loved! A License to Sin?

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We all need mercy. God is rich is mercy. When we recognize that, salvation comes! This salvation is the same for Jew and Gentile alike. For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, Romans 10:12 "In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace." Romans 11:5-6

  • Daniel discusses the consequences of sin. We often say that God is punishing us when really we are just experiencing the consequence of our sins. Forgiveness is ours.
  • Nick about Hebrews 12:8: If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Isn't that punishment?

God is Rich in Mercy

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

Romans 11:32 says this: "For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all." This is the wisdom of God and it's been carried out since His resurrection and it show His mercy to us. How does mercy pertain to your everyday life? God is rich in mercy. All too often we forget God's mercy. We should be bragging about the mercy and grace God has show us. We should celebrate the mercy found in Christ.

  • Is there a special way to pray? Everyday I try to read books, the Word, and I feel burned out - like I'm just not enough.

I Desire Mercy, Not Sacrifice

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

I love how Jesus stumped the Pharisees. On one occasion Jesus was eating with a tax collector and sinners. The Pharisees were puzzled. Jesus answered them, "On hearing this, Jesus said, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:12, 13 Jesus came to fix a problem. His mercy on us took us from sinner to saint... from lost to saved.

  • What do yo think of this hyper-grace? Do we need to keep asking God to forgive us?

  • If we're forgiven for all our sins - past, present, and future - what do we do? If we don't do anything with the knowledge God has given us how will we stand at the throne of judgment?

Receive the Mercy He has for You

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." Psalm 51:1, 2 This is one of the cries of David's heart after he had committed sin. He knew there was nothing he could do to reconcile that situation. He knew that only God's mercy. In Romans 4 we see the answer. This prayer has been answered for us all well. At the cross Jesus took the punishment for us so that we can experience the forgiveness of sins. There may be many that have the prayer of David and I encourage to to look to the cross for the answer found in Christ's finished work.

Shadow and Reality - Law and Grace - Lesson 17

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Are you a child of God? Do you know all the benefits that you receive when you become a child of God? We explore those benefits today. You have been delivered from darkness - now you are light. Because you are a child of God, you have become an heir, together with Christ, and you share in his glory. Let that sink in a minute - you are a co-heir with Christ himself! Your citizenship is now in Heaven - you are living in the world, but your home is in Heaven with Him. You are clothed with Christ - your identification is with him. You are secure and safe in your salvation. Your life is now hidden with Christ from now through eternity. That's some good news!

God Made Us Alive in Christ

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Ephesians 2:3 "All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved." Jesus stepped into our shoes and turned aside the wrath of God. Our sins have been condemned and punished in Jesus. He sees us and acts upon us in mercy and love.

  • Clay talks about the gift of grace being shown and demonstrated in the Old Testament. In Hebrews 4:15 and 16 we see and invitation to approach the throne of grace.
