Rescued from This Evil Age

Bob Christopher, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

The words in Galatians 1:3-5 "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." have relevance to us today. There is a contrast between us and the world. As we grow in Christ we can learn what this means. Counter to popular belief, the world is not getting better, but Jesus has rescued us and we have the privilege of sharing the good news.

  • Robert asks about Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist.
  • We are freely given in Christ: redemption, justification, forgiveness, holiness, righteousness, sanctification, a new identity etc., so we can't boast in our own works to earn these merits but boast in Him who gave it to us freely.
  • William believes the condition of the world is directly related to the percentage of believers today.

Live as Free People

Bob Christopher, Richard Peifer

We're talking about our freedom in Christ. That's what this message of the Gospel does. He has set us free to experience the new life He's given us. In 1 Peter 2:16 we read: "Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God's slaves." Freedom is stepping forward in this newness of life, learning to live as servants of God.

Serve One Another in Love

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in one command, to serve one another. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1 This is what the Son of God did. He did not come to be served, but to serve. And that's what we're called to do.

Made Alive in Christ

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

How has the Gospel message renewed your mind? For me - when I came to Christ - I knew the Gospel as the forgiveness of sins. I lived that for 8 or 9 years and zero power to fight the temptations that came. I was in a cycle of messing up and asking God to forgive me again. Only when I learned that when I was dead in sin, God made me alive. We need life. And that life is in Christ.

Put Off the Old

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. In Ephesians 4:22, 23 Paul writes: "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds...". The mind - how we think - is an essential part of our growing in Jesus. Right now we're seeing this Gospel message renewing our minds. So how has the Gospel message renewed your mind?

Those Things of Most Importance

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

We talked yesterday about freedom. We tied this to Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." So how does this tie into renewing our mind? I can now ask Jesus—who lives in me—to work in me and change me and give us a new attitude about God, ourselves, and others.

The Secret of Contentment

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

John 8:31b, 32 "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." We've been set free from the law of sin and death. Jesus is the one that did that and He makes us alive with Him. Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." We stand before God as forgiven people. But what does the world say? We have to do something to receive forgiveness. And if we believe this we fall into bondage once again. However the truth is that He has forgiven us once for all. Jesus has given us His righteousness and we can stand in that truth. When we do, we'll be set free from the error in the world.

Full of Grace and Truth

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

One of those foundational truths that we need to understand in in John 8:31, 32 "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" If you want to know truth you need to know Jesus. He alone is full of grace and truth.

Set Free to Serve One Another in Love

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Romans 8:1, 2 is the retelling of the "Exodus story" in this New Covenant. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death." There are many people set free - for example from prison - but they don't know how to live as free people. There freedom is not sustainable. This is true for Christians as well. We need to understand what we've bet set free from and what we've been set free for. When we truly embrace these truths we'll never turn back to the old way of life.

Sinners or Saints?

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

"Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?" How do you answer that? If we're forgiven people, than why behave... Romans 6 shows us we are made different. We've been changed on the inside. So are we sinners or saints? Jesus says we're born of Him. And if we are born of Him, what are we really like?
