Train Up a Child

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

What is a parent's most important job? Paul writes in Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." As parents we have to learn how to allow the love of God to transform us from the inside out so that we can impart God's love to our children. Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

God's Love in Relationships

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

Apart from our relationship with Jesus Christ marriage is the fundamental relationship of everything. We talked about three circles - spirit, soul, and body - as if they're separate things. But they're really more like concentric circles. In the marriage relationship we need to learn where God's love fits in.

  • How can we better learn to forgive ourselves?
  • Monica asks about the Law of Moses vs. living by the Word of God.
  • David asks if it's OK to leave money and assets to charity.
  • Can you be a Christian and not believe what's in the Bible?

Living a Sunday Life in a Friday World - Lesson 44

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

How do we live a Sunday life in a Friday world? The world is not for us, it is against us. Our choice is to either live by the law (the way of the world) or by grace through faith in Jesus. The law simply diagnoses our spiritual problem, but it cannot provide the cure. That's Jesus's job. Law as a rule of life rests squarely on the shoulders of human effort. Now our life is to be lived by faith in Jesus. He will produce his life in and through us. The Sunday life is a life led by and empowered by the Spirit of God. (Chapter 13, page 97)

Agape Love

Richard Peifer, Bob Davis

What does the Gospel have to say about relationships? These two passages are literally the key to relationships. In Ephesians 1:13, 14 "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. ..." 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 "All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation ..." Being sealed by the Holy Spirit would be impossible if we weren't reconciled by God. If we don't know these two things in our relationships then we don't have a basis for relationship.

  • Lucy asks how to console a friend who's grieving for her brother.
  • Elenore asks about 2 Peter 2. Specifically vs. 21 "It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them."

Husbands, Love Your Wives

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Our tag line is "Hear it. Believe it. Live it." And if we're going to "live it" it has to be within the relationships we have. In Ephesians 5 Paul gives us some inside information. We are to be controlled by the love of God. And when we're controlled by the love of God we can submit to one another in Christ. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless."

  • What does it mean the "just shall live by faith"?
  • Justine wants to know if Mark 9:43-47 (cut off your hand, pluck out your eye) is to be taken literally.
