Guarantor of a Better Covenant

Bob Christopher, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

One of the things we see in the new covenant is a guarantee... the best that's every been given. "Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant." Hebrews 7:22

  • What does Paul mean in Romans 2:16 "according to my Gospel"?
  • Can someone lose their salvation?
  • Please explain Luke 16:19-24 concerning the rich man wanting just a drop of water.
  • I see a lot of Christians who bear a lot of fruit and turn back to the world. I believe a person choses to forfeit their salvation.

I Will Refresh the Weary

Bob Christopher, Richard Peifer

"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God... Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest..." Hebrews 4:9,11 So often we work, work, work to be a Christian and yet God calls us to rest. So often we try our best and wait for God's approval. But there's no way to rest that way. "Anyone who enters His rest also rests from their own work."

  • A friend wondered what happens to Jesus when we sin. Does He suffer each time we sin?
  • What does it mean to "enter His rest" in relation to Jeremiah 31:25 "I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint"?
  • My wife's niece has been battling cancer for the last year, but probably won't live another year. Is there anything I can do to bring her more comfort in this time?

Have You Entered Into the Finished Work of Christ?

Bob Christopher, Richard Peifer

Yesterday we talked about the curtain being torn so we could enter the Holy of Holies. But there's another reality we have it Christ. We can now enter His rest. When we come to Jesus we can rest. H 4:9-10 "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His."

  • I heard that a Christian should surrender to God everyday. But I can't find that in the New Covenant.
  • Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven...". Matthew 7:21 So who enters the Kingdom?
  • Galatians 6:2 tells us to bear each others burdens. How do we do that?

Draw Near with Confidence

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-18

He Who Promised is Faithful

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

The New Covenant is not like the Old that brought judgment and condemnation. The New Covenant brings life and brings us into the very presence of God. Under the Old there was a barrier. When Jesus died the curtain that surrounded the Holy of Holies was ripped from top to bottom. "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

  • Do you think it's time to teach the grace of giving?
  • I've never seen the title "reverend" in the Bible.

We Have Something Better

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

Matthew records all that happened at the death of Christ in Matthew 27. The curtain was torn. The earth shook. Rocks split. Tombs were broken open. So what does this mean when the curtain was torn?

  • I'm reading "Operation Screwtape" and recognizing the strategies of the enemy and it's freeing me. Is renewing the mind the same as removing the veil?
  • What's the difference between tithing and the being a Basic Gospel partner?
  • Is it evil for pastors to press for a tithe?

Invited Into the Throne Room

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

On the day Jesus Christ died there were many strange happenings. "At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus' resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people." Matthew 27:51-53

  • Is it evil for pastors to press for a tithe? Especially as it relates to Galatianism.

Forgiveness is Done.

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We're looking at the promises of the New Covenant. This covenant is internal... something God is doing in us by His Spirit. "There sins and lawless acts I will remember no more. And where they have been forgiven there is no longer any sacrifice for sins." But do we really believe this? If we do, we'll recognize that forgiveness is done.

  • There's one Scripture I've been grappling with. In Luke 22:36 what did Jesus mean by "if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one"?
  • What about in the natural realm? Should you protect your house and household?
  • Why does the modern Gospel not include warnings about Hell and God's wrath?
  • Is Jesus God or the Son of God? Is their Scripture where Jesus says He is God?
  • How does having the "mind of Christ" 1 Corinthians 2:16 compare with the indwelling Holy Spirit?

Trust the Finished Work of Jesus Christ

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

All of the promises of the New Covenant are real in our lives because Jesus Christ is alive. Promise number 4 is the foundation for all the promises: "their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more. And where these have been forgiven there's no longer any sacrifice for sin." Hebrews 10:17,18

No Longer Any Sacrifice for Sins

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis

Today we're talking about the fourth promise of the New Covenant. This is the foundation for the other three. If it wasn't true there be no reality of the others. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Hebrews 8:12 Forgiveness has always required the shedding of blood, but under the New, Jesus shed his blood once for all.

  • Does Hebrews 8:11 mean we don't need anyone to tell us about Jesus?
  • Can you explain 1 John 3:9 in light of the fact that we all still sin?
  • Why did God make the decision to create the physical universe knowing about how much we would suffer?
  • How does prayer change things?
