Overcoming Fear and Anxiety

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, Andrew Farley

How has the Gospel helped you overcome fear and anxiety? Coming back to truth - the truth that God is for you - is the way to overcome those emotions. So much of this is our desire to control people and circumstances.

  • "The freedom in Christ that I learned from the truth, the gospel. That's what helps me overcome fear and anxiety."
  • "Lifted the fear of punishment from my heart. Helped me to read the Bible differently. Put my eyes on Jesus Perfect Life and not on my own weakness...so many ways. Has even helped me get over my fear of sharing Jesus."
  • William brings up Matthew 8:11, 12 in regards to all Israel being saved.
  • Shaun calls to reminde us that F.E.A.R is false evidence appearing real.

Truth vs. Error: The Battle of the Mind

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

40 million Americans suffer from anxiety or similar disorder. Does the World of God answer that issue? In Philippians 4:6-7 we are told "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." We don't have to be anxious. Instead we can respond to anxiety with a thankful heart that God is guarding our heart and mind. The key to peace in the midst of trouble is an attitude of thankfulness.

Built on the Rock

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Emotions are a normal thing. They are the flavor of life. We don't want to be trapped by emotions, but we don't want to be emotionless either. So what do we do? We have to change our thinking. Emotions always follows our thinking. Jesus put it this way: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:24, 25

  • How do we know the difference between walking in our own strength or walking in Jesus' strength?
  • If truth sets you free what is it that traps you?
  • How do I know that I am walking in the Spirit and not just my religious traditions?
  • Bob from Keller asks for clarification on forgiveness and confession.

Eternal Life - Lesson 55

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

We have a new law in Christ Jesus. It is an internal law, not the external laws written on stone. The New Covenant is internal - written on our hearts. This law is made known to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. You have been entrusted with the knowledge of God. That's what distinguishes you from the world. To know God is to know that He is love. The expression of the New Covenant is love. That's the story of the Gospel. (Chapter 15, page 115)

How to Overcome Depression

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer, John Lynch

John Lynch and Bob Christopher discuss the problem of depression and offer hope through the good news of Jesus Christ. Almost 7% of the population is depressed and suicide is the leading cause of death for teens. To help address the serious situation of emotional disorders, we are speaking with John Lynch, author of The Cure and On My Worst Day. John gets beneath the surface to see that as long as hope is alive, we can move forward but when hope dies, depression comes. The faith community often offers cheap, easy answers that really don't help at all. Depression is not a personal flaw, not a matter of spiritual immaturity, not a punishment from God, never because you are not enough. Those truths are an incredible hope for people who feel this crisis of faith in their depression. Knowing that you are adored by God, that he is not frustrated with you, that even with this condition God can and will use your life in amazing ways. We receive a compassion and clarity even in the midst of incredible darkness when we grasp the love of God for us. The God of all grace will perfect and confirm and strengthen and establish you.

Eternal Redemption for You

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

One of the major ingredients of depression is guilt and shame. The thought of what is to come is tied up in their past. Hebrews 9:11-14 "But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. ... How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!"

I've yet to meet a person who hasn't worried at some point in their life. We create these dark scenarios and we start to worry. For men one of the big worries is money. But the reality is that Jesus Christ saved us for eternity and is big enough to take care of the here and now. When we trust in him we exchange fear for joy.

On the Road to Freedom in Christ Jesus

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

Philippians 6:4 says "do not be anxious about anything". Why would he say that? Because our human tendency is to be anxious. Anxiety causes us to think negative thoughts. Our emotions respond to that thinking and before long we are on a downward spiral to depression. This month we will be digging deep into depression and anxiety. There is a way off the emotional roller coaster. His name is Jesus.

Eternal Life - Lesson 54

Bob Christopher, Bob Davis, Richard Peifer

As we grow in our knowledge of Christ, things start to happen inside of us. We begin to be transformed in the image of Christ. We are part of a bigger picture. God works in us to connect others to the love of God. That's really what grace is all about - it's God work in us to connect us to his love, to enable us to understand, to be grounded in that love and to grow in that love. As we do we see that salvation is much more than me being saved. God uses our story to connect others to that same grace and love. To be part of that plan is the most exciting thing in life. That's the direction of grace - it reaches down and saves us but it continues to work in us and bring us to the point where we are fully engaged in God's purpose and plan. The skeptics say that grace is a license to sin. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Holy Spirit works in you to animate your faith, anchor your hope and source your love. He has lifted you out of that old way and ordered your steps to walk in love. (Chapter 15, page 114)
